Straighten Children's Teeth Without Braces...
The Case for Early Treatment

A common approach in dentistry and orthodontics is to treat crooked teeth in the teenage years with the use of braces. The extraction of adult teeth has been common, although the trend in orthodontics is definitely towards techniques that avoid extractions.

This is because many parents are questioning why there is a need to wait until their child is a teenager, when they have noticed the teeth are incorrectly positioned as young as six years old.

Our view is that incorrect dental and facial development can be detected at an early age, but often no treatment is recommended until much later. In our view this is undesirable. This American and Australian Society of Orthodontists have announced that it is desirable for all children to be assessed by the age of seven, as many orthodontic conditions can benefit from early treatment. Habits such as mouth breathing, incorrect swallowing and tongue thrusting can cause poor facial appearance and crooked teeth. Early treatment to correct these habits and develop the jaw can result in a better looking face and help avoid braces and extractions.

Our Alternative To Braces

The MYOBRACE orthodontic appliance incorporates design characteristics which align the teeth and jaws, while correcting the underlying habits causing for good teeth. It is ideally worn by the 6 to 12 year old age group and acts like braces by twisting and rotating teeth into the ideal position.

Our focus is to give a child a beautiful dental arch, which can help long term stability of orthodontic treatment. The Myobrace appliance is worn one to two hours a day and at night. It is usually introduced after the course of arch development. That process is explained on a different part of this website.

Sometimes older children can benefit from wearing the Myobrace, but it is much harder at a later stage. The later the intervention, the more likely it is conventional braces will be required.
